can you use a normal trumpet mouthpiece on a pocket trumpet?
Just bought my first pocket trumpet and I'm waiting on it to get here. It's mostly for practice so I want the mouthpiece to be as close to the one I use on my full size as possible. Can I just take my 1.5 C bach and put it into the pocket, or should I get a new one? If I do have to get a new one what is the closest model to a 1.5 C bach you know of?
Your pocket trumpet will have either a trumpet shank mouthpipe, or a cornet shank mouthpipe. The cornet shank is much smaller than a trumpet mouthpipe. So you may need a new mouthpiece depending on what you ordered. If it is cornet shank, a Bach 1.5C for cornet has approximately the same dimensions as the Trumpet Bach 1.5C. But since the backbore of the mouthpice will be different, it will play differently - with more resistance.
If you get a trumpet shank pocket rocket, you can use your current mouthpiece. A pocket trumpet is in the key of Bb, and has the same length of tubing as a regular Bb trumpet (unlike a Piccolo Trumpet, which has approx. half the tubing of a regular Bb trumpet). Depending on the bore of the new horn, it will almost certainly play different than what you are playing today. So you may choose to try different mouthpieces to get the sound and feel you are looking for with your new axe.
FYI...most of the new pocket trumpets made today are of questionable quality and playability. So if you did not pay much, don't be too disappointed. If you bought a 70's vintage Benge, they rock! In any case, they are fun to goof around with. Enjoy!
