How hard is it to switch from trumpet to Alto Saxophone?
I've been playing trumpet for almost 5 years, and recently I've gotten an interest in the saxophone. My friend has been semi-teaching me how to play her Alto Sax, and I can produce a nice tone on it. I wanted to know how difficult it might be to be switching back in between these two, and does it mean I need lessons on the saxophone?
I started on the clarinet and switched to the saxophone and that was pretty seamless, but since there's little similarity between trumpet and sax, it might be a little harder.
It will be easier to learn than when you learned the trumpet because you don't have to learn all the music theory at the same time, assuming you read music. It's the same clef and everything. I'd imagine its easier because all of the notes have a specific fingering and there is less guesswork with your chops on the sax.
Lessons or not kind of depends on what you want to do with it. Are you playing just for fun, or in a school/community band? Will you be competeing? When I switched from alto to Tenor Sax I took lessons because I would be competing on tenor. I could have learned it by myself since all of the fingerings are the same, but it was important that I did well, so I got some help.
