Piccolo Trumpet
Can I play a different type of trumpet?
In my High School band, the trumpets are all in B flat. But I would like to play either a piccolo trumpet, flugelhorn, or C trumpet. My band director would be okay with it, but I don't know if he has the sheet music. So would it be possible to play B flat trumpet music on one of these instruments? (the flugelhorn and piccolo would also be in B flat) Would it just require a change of fingering?
Flugelhorns use the exact same fingerings as a standard Bb trumpet. Quality piccolo trumpets have 4 valves, not 3. This is because it's easy to play sharp in the extreme high register, so the player will press the 4th valve in addition to the normal fingerings. If you wanted to play a C trumpet, you could not read Bb music. You would have to either get C trumpet music or learn to transpose while reading. A lot of classical/musical players are good at that so they don't have to keep switching trumpets.
