What musical instrument should I buy?
I've decided to get myself an instrument for my 46th birthday and learn to play it. Any recommendations? I don't have room for anything like a piano. I also don't have any musical talent, so I'm looking for something pretty easy. I want something I can play by itself, not something like the triangle that is just for accent.
If you can find a Native American flute circle in your area I'm sure they would let you try out some flutes. They are great because each flute plays a pentatonic (5 note) scale that is all in one key, therefore all in one chord. That means when you get brave enough to Play Along with others you can improvise and really not make a mistake because all the notes you can play are ok. If you get interested, you'll need a lot of different flutes eventually and the best ones are a little expensive but really beautiful pieces of woodworking art. The good news is that, for a beginner, some flute maker make some in PVC pipe which sound almost as good, are really cheap, but really kind of ugly but it's a good way to find out if you like it. You can go as far musically as you want to with these flutes but you can also just sit down and doodle some really pretty sounds. I'm giving you a link to a flute maker I know, not to promote him as much as to give you a little idea of what good flutes are like. Also, look on YouTube for Rae Denton to hear what a really good player can do with a lot of experience. All the ideas you get will probably be good ones but only you can decide what you really want. I play guitar and am taking bass lessons and learning the NAF (Native American Flute) as well. Oh, by the way, I'm 67 yrs old so there's plenty of time for you.
