How come on a flute the Eb/D# key is nearly always to be pressed, but on a saxophone it isn't?
How come on a flute the Eb/D# key is nearly always to be pressed, but on a saxophone it isn't?
The more observant of you flute question answerers will notice that this is like my 5th question about flute playing on here.
Just so you know, I've played sax for 6 years... also I DO have a few private lessons (flute) booked so don't worry.
Anyway, yes, please expand on this little detail I have noticed about these 2 woodwind instruments.
Physics.
For the flute it aids both in intonation and balance of the instrument in the musician's hands where it is supported both by the thumb and pinkie of the right hand. And supported most often by the thumb of the left hand.
I don't play sax, but imagine that the key adds little to intonation and is awkward to hold while playing.
